Listen to the stories of three individuals who have overcome great challenges in their lives, discovering something about themselves in the process.
Tasks:
1. Listen to three TED Talks by authors of different backgrounds (Nationality, Gender, Disability) each who dealt with a life-changing situation.
2. During each talk, using the Transcript and/or Subtitles as needed, fill in the TED Talk Worksheet.
3. After each talk answer the following questions:
a. How did you determine what the speaker’s main point was?
b. What methods did they use to get your attention or keep you interested? (Humour, emotions, movement/body language)
c. What methods did you use to follow the talk? (Jotting notes, transcript, subtitles, replaying sections)
d. What could you do differently to better follow along? (Jotting notes, transcript, subtitles, replaying sections)
4. After you’ve heard all three talks, pick one. Answer the following questions:
a. Which talk did you pick?
b. Why did you pick this talk? (Favourite, most interesting, most inspiring)
c. In what ways do you feel connected to the speaker? (Similar situation, similar background, shared experiences)
5. There are currently more than 2100 TED Talks on the website. You have now watched three I have picked, and it’s your turn to find one for me to watch.
a. Go to http://www.ted.com/talks
b. Click on the dropdown for Topic and select “See All Topics” at the bottom the list
c. There are 4 columns of topics on each page, and 9 pages. Find one that interests you. Note that if you pick a second topic it will show only Talks that have BOTH topics. You need to ‘Clear’ the ‘Active Filter’ to remove the previous topic.
d. One you have a Talk to share, write a paragraph introducing it. The paragraph must include the following:
i. Speaker
ii. Title
iii. Date
iv. Subject/Topic
v. Why this talk interested you
vi. Why this speaker is a good speaker/What they do well
vii. What you learned from the Talk
Formative Work to Submit:
1. Three completed TED Talk Worksheets
2. Three typed answers to question 3
3. One typed answer to question 4
Summative Work to Submit:
1. Typed paragraph summary of the TED Talk you picked
